Fun Recipes

These are some fun recipes. Fun because you can vary the ingredients a lot, using what is on hand. Fun because it is such a hoot making them! Kneading dough by hand can be very therapeutic! We’ve made these on rainy days and have all the dogs sitting on the kitchen floor in rapt attention, noses sniffing the air. They know the end result will be for them and if they behave, they can lick the bowls!

Leftover Cookies

I make all my dog treats and we have 5 dogs. It's really fun and economical. You also know what goes into your own treats. Here is a simple one. You can vary it a lot to suit your dogs taste. I usually add a little garlic and dried parsley. I've done it with dried cranberries and blueberries too. The important thing is to get them dried. I buy all my specialty flours in bulk and store in our "doggie fridge".

3 1/2 cp whole wheat flour or brown rice flour

2 cups old fashioned oats

1 cup milk

1/2 no sodium broth (you can use bullion, but watch out for MSG, not good for the doggies)

1/2 cup meat drippings (left over from fixing a roast or whatever in the slow cooker)

Mix together wet ingredients and add dry. I roll it out on parchment paper and just score it for breaking later, but you can get fancy and use cookie cutters.

Bake at 300 for 1 hour. Leave in oven to dry overnight. Store in airtight container.

Harvest Biscuits

2 eggs

1/2 cup canned pumpkin (not pie filling) or cooked mashed pumpkin

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons dry milk

2 1/2 cups brown rice flour (or whatever kind you like)

water as needed.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Blend eggs and pumpkin together; add salt, dry milk, and flour.
Add water as needed to make the dough somewhat workable.
The dough should be dry and stiff
You will need to knead with your hands because it is too stiff for an electric mixer.
Roll to 1/2-inch thick.
Cut into shapes.
Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 20 minutes on one side, then turn over and bake til golden.

Veggie Cookies

2-½ cups rice flour or organic white flour (these two are lowest in phosphorus, which is best for kidney disease)

½ tsp. garlic powder, or fresh ground

6 Tbsp no sodium chicken broth

½ cup cold water

1 cup cooked vegetables ground up (winter squashes, zucchini, and sweet potatoes are low in phosphorus, which is best for kidney disease)

Combine flour and garlic; mix in chicken broth and vegetable(s); add enough cold water to form a ball; pat dough to ½" and cut into desired shapes; place on non-stick cookie sheet and bake in preheated oven at 350F for 25 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Freeze what is not eaten within a week.
